Bettye Lavette Slated to Play The Who Benefit at Carnegie Hall, New York City, March 2, 2010

Bettye Lavette is slated to join a host of other performers as she takes the stage at Carnegie Hall to play the Who Benefit, March 2, 2010. Although the Who may not have been associated with the Blues, nor R&B, the evening would not be complete unless Bettye were present to recreate the sterling performance she gave at the Kennedy Center Honors of the Who’s Rein O’er Me.

As you may recall if you saw the Kennedy Honors, although she may not have been the biggest name on stage at the Kennedy Center Honors that night, her typically gut-wrenching, soulful interpretation of The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” provided one of the evening’s most spectacular moments.

The Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl recently described his first encounter with Bettye’s rendition of the song to Air America’s Richard Greene: “We showed up for rehearsal, and one of the performers was rehearsing the song for the Who segment. It was a woman named Bettye LaVette…She is gonna steal the show. She was so phenomenal, this performance of The Who song that she did. It will bring you to tears. The room was pin-drop silent when she did this song, and it was just unbelievable”.

The Who’s Pete Townshend himself agreed. “My favorite moment was when Bettye LaVette sang a very fine version of ‘Love Reign O’er Me’ at the Gala and Barbra Streisand turned to ask me if I really wrote it.”

Bettye was nominated for a 2009 Blues Music Award, Best Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year. The awards will be given in Memphis, TN on May 7, 2009

Bettye’s Grammy-nominated CD, THE SCENE OF THE CRIME, earned her praise across the board. NPR asked “Is there any soul singer who brings more guts, more conviction and more emotion to her singing?” Entertainment Weekly echoed, “Is there a more wrenching soul singer alive than Bettye LaVette? If so, keep it to yourself, because I’m too wrung out from Crime’s intensity to take anything more emotionally potent,” USA Today, “This album…just rips, with some truly sublime peaks.” Rolling Stone, “LaVette’s nuanced singing evokes prime Tina Turner with even more command”.

Joining Bettye Lavette will be Bobby McFerrin, Mose Allison, Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule, Bob Mould, Gaslight Anthem, Matt Nathanson, Sondre Lerche, the Postelles, Living Colour, Robyn Hitchcock and the Smithereens, and Frank Black of the Pixies.

The show is being presented by the music impresario Michael Dorf, founder of the Knitting Factory and the owner of City Winery, and is the sixth concert in a series. Previous concerts have celebrated Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, R.E.M., Elton John and Bruce Springsteen.

Proceeds will be distributed to six music education nonprofits, including the American Symphony Orchestra Music Notes, Church Street School for Music and Art, Young Audiences, Music Unites All-Youth Choir, the Pinwheel Project and FIKS (Fixing Instruments for Kids in Schools).
