Mission Statements:

The Brooklyn Jazz Underground is an association of independent artists with a shared commitment to creativity and community. Through cooperative efforts, the BJU aims to build a greater awareness of original music emerging from Brooklyn, NY.

Connection Works is an artist-run non-profit organization (501c3) that engages the Brooklyn community with world-class jazz performances and educational events. Our programs promote and facilitate new work by established and up-and-coming artists alike. We provide a forum that supports the astonishing number of brilliant artists in our borough. We at Connection Works believe in and encourage the practice of creativity as a means to nourish the mind, body, and spirit.

Two artist-run jazz organizations based in Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Jazz Underground and Connection Works, have teamed up to produce a weekly jazz residency at Korzo in South Park Slope: UNDERGROUND WORKS. The performances take place every Thursday, and are curated by a different core member each month. The curator for April is flutist and composer, Michel Gentile. Michel has recorded and performed with Anthony Braxton, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Adam Rudolph, and many others. Michel has also worked extensively with dance, theater, and film. April’s program will include: vocalists, a jazz woodwind quintet, solo bass, and cutting edge original music by established jazz groups.

Since the Spring of 2008 BJURecords has been actively  expanding its catalog with recordings from a diverse group of Brooklyn-based artists who, in their own brilliantly unique way, are defining the Brooklyn/NYC jazz scene.  The full catalog, and additional information is available at http://www.BJURecords.com.  Releases in 2010 will include new recordings from trombonist Mike Fahie (feat. Bill McHenry, Ben Monder, Ben Street, Billy Hart), trumpeter David Smith, drummers Sunny Jain and Owen Howard, and bassist Alexis Cuadrado.

The Brooklyn Jazz Underground is: Alexis Cuadrado, Alan Ferber, Rob Garcia, Anne Mette Iversen, Sunny Jain, Adam Kolker, Dan Pratt & David Smith

The Critics Sound off on The BJU:

“Consider this the opening shot in the latest revolution to hit New York’s improv scene.” – Time Out New York

“These days integrity counts for a lot.  That’s what keeps jazz relevant in a fragmented music industry.  Musicians like Cuadrado and The Brooklyn Jazz Underground understand that it takes more than talent.” – NPR.org/music

” . . . these renegade BJU bands are comprised of intelligent composers, open-minded arrangers and free-spirited improvisers.  They all deserve to be heard.”- JazzTimes

“Think of it as a mix-tape, a calling card from artists who operate in a small world but like to think big.” – JazzTimes (on the Brooklyn Jazz Underground Compilation, Vol. 1)

“The Brooklyn Jazz Underground is a coalition of artists united by aesthetics as well as geography.”- The New York Times

“The Brooklyn Jazz Underground had its launch last week at Small’s in Manhattan, but the spirit of the organization is firmly rooted in Brooklyn. All of the members reside there, and they wanted to give a nod to the vitality of its scene.”  – The Wall Street Journal

” . . . in the Brooklyn Jazz Underground, jazz has ten different definitions.” – All About Jazz.com

“Brooklyn jazz is happening and those who venture across the bridge will be delighted by the hard-edged ethnically-flavored jazz that they find on the other side.” – All About Jazz New York

”  . . . absolutely electrifying” – The Rochester City Paper (on Anne Mette Iversen’s Best of the West/Many Places)

“10 New York-based artists have formed the Brooklyn Jazz Underground, a collective of 10 bandleaders who are pooling their resources to forge increased awareness of their individual projects.” – Billboard/Reuters

“There’s power in numbers, and a bunch of local musicians have united to share their ideas and enhance their visibility”  ” . . . the breadth (and singularity) of these up-and-comers will be obvious” – The Village Voice

” . . . CDs that make you sit up and listen . . .” – The Hartford Courant

“Brooklyn’s best jazz artists are benefiting from an exciting new fusion of business and music.”  “Ten of the borough’s top talents have joined forces . . .” – 24/7
