Full Moon Saturday Night
Artist Spotlight: The Waifs

The Waifs

Triple platinum, multi-award winning recording artists, The Waifs, are a folk-rock band from Western Australia. Their 2003 independent roots music landmark recording, “Up All Night” went double platinum and garnered four ARIA Awards. The Waifs are one of Australia’s most successful bands. Their honest song writing, rollicking bluesiness, and the soaring vocals of sisters Donna and Vikki Simpson, and guitarist Josh Cunningham, have made them a hit with folk and roots audiences. The Waifs started their journey as Australian grass-roots road warriors and are now international festival favorites.

This year sports a full moon on the Saturday night, with both The Waifs and Little Feat closing out underneath the bright lunar glow in the Main Music Meadow. Following them, for the late-night crowd, at the more intimate stages, will be Hot Buttered Rum, a tip of the hat to Norton Buffalo with Charlie Musselwhite and Catfish Jack, and a dance party with the Love Choir. Friday night features Robert Earl Keen, Greg Brown, Po’ Girl and more, while Sunday night concludes with the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, Steve Earle (solo), and Ani Di Franco. And once again the Sherry Austin Band will perform a full set of Kate Wolf songs. Amongst the many other highlights scheduled for the weekend will be a late afternoon set on Sunday joining Poor Man’s Whiskey and Hot Buttered Rum in a grouping dubbed “Poor Buttered Rumskey”, and the dance inducing songs and rhythms of Baka Beyond, a band of musicians from Britain, France and Africa.

The festival is just a three hour drive north of San Francisco and two hours south of Arcata. With a large stage in the Main Music Meadow, three other intimate stage areas, workshops, kids’ area, camping, food court, music jamming area, and flowing creek, the annual Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a weekend with friends, family, and lovers of great music. Black Oak Ranch is home to the Hog Farm and Camp Winnarainbow-a circus camp for kids. Having garnered a reputation as a calm, peaceful gathering of music lovers, the festival grounds cover approximately 150 acres, and the event is powered by bio-diesel generators.
