Chris Massey above all else is a modern drummer taught in the old tradition of swing; his ethos is to “put his sound” underneath a player and let the fire start to spread. He is currently residing in the New York City area and performing with/leading his newly formed modern jazz group “The Nue Jazz Project”.
The Nue Jazz Project led by NYC drummer Chris Massey is a modern hard swinging jazz group in either a trio or quartet/quintet setting. These artists have performed in a variety of venues in NYC and the surrounding areas including the 55 Bar, Smoke, Puppets Birdland, St. Nicks Pub, The Garage, Cleopatra’s Needle, Fat Cat, Smalls, Tagine Lounge, The Gershwin Lounge along with others. The artists themselves have performed with many top jazz greats such as Joe Lovano, Dave Holland, Donald Harrison Jr., Terri Lynn Carrington, and Pat Martino.
“One of the best sounding jazz groups I have heard in a long time.” – M.P. Kuo, Uptime Studios
“After hearing Chris Massey, it’s apparent that he has been well-educated and is a very enthusiastic drummer. It is apparent that he listened to some of the great drummers like Max Roach, Roy Haynes” – Delores Ashford, Delores Music Mgt.
The groups music comprises of original tunes written by members of the band as well as arrangements of traditional jazz standards. Recently they just recorded their latest album entitled “Vibrainium” which will be due out in summer of 2010. All of the artists in the group bring a great energy to every venue they perform.
