The Catbird Jazz Society and Joey’s Restaurant Bar are pleased to present the AJM Trio on Saturday, October 2, at 8 PM.

The AJM trio brings together three talented Canadian jazz musicians in a world class concert that should not be missed. Mark Adam and Chris Jennings grew up in Calgary following the music of Mike Murley, and through the 1990s they had various opportunities to perform and study with him in Toronto. Mike and Mark have worked together much more in the last few years and this new trio promises to bring forward a vital and new sound from Eastern Canada.

Drummer/percussionist Mark Adam has made a versatile career across Canada and around the world as a strong, creative musical voice and has lent his support to a diverse array of the best musicians this country has to offer. Mark has played with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the Evergreen Gamelan Club. He has also been an ensemble member and guest soloist in the New Works Calgary Ensemble, principal percussionist of the Banff Centre for the Arts Orchestra under Krysztof Penderecki, and a frequent performer on CBC. He has shared the stage with Ralph Bowen, Jonathan Kreisberg, Mike Murley, and Andrew Downing, and tours with The Dave Restivo Quintet, Carol Welsman, and Jake Langley. Mark teaches at Acadia University and is one of the East Coast’s most in-demand percussion/music educators, having been a guest artist at many universities and music festivals.

In Paris, France since 2002, Chris Jennings has established himself as double bassist with guitarist Nguyen Lê’s New Quartet (with Rita Marcotulli and Danny Gottlieb/Roberto Gato), Nguyen Lê’s Fragile Beauty Project, the Dhafer Youssef Quartet (with Tigran Hamasyan and Mark Guiliana), and renowned Turkish Ney musician Kudsi Erguner. A performer, composer, leader, arranger, and teacher, Chris plays a wide variety of musical genres and styles on both upright and electric basses. He leads the Chris Jennings Trio with Pierre Perchaud on acoustic guitar and Leon Parker on drums, as well as the Jennings/Perchaud acoustic duo. Other projects include performing with the Jacek Kochan/Dave Liebman Quartet in Eastern Europe, with the Lee Konitz/Giovanni Ceccarelli Quartet, and with such performers as Andy Milne, Danny Gottlieb, Satoshi Takeishi, and “El Gusto” (Algerian Orchestra). Since 1996, Chris has completed numerous self-study/project residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts , a B.A. in Jazz Performance from the University of Toronto (2000), and an M.A. in Music from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague, Holland (2004).

An engaging, lyrical saxophonist, originally from Windsor, Nova Scotia, Mike Murley is one of Canada’s finest jazz talents and one of the most versatile players on the scene today. Currently active as a leader in various formations from duo to septet, Murley also maintains a busy schedule as a sideman and jazz educator (York University, and at the Banff Centre for the Arts). Since 1991, Murley has played on nine Juno Award winning recordings and has been named saxophonist of the year eight times by the Jazz Report Awards and National Jazz Awards. Murley’s latest recording as a leader, “The Melody Lingers On” (CBC records), finds his trio live in concert at the Glenn Gould Studio with a twelve-piece string ensemble conducted by Rick Wilkins. Also featured on the recording are Guido Basso (flugelhorn) and Tara Davidson (saxes), with string arrangements by Murley and guitarist Reg Schwager. In 2008, Murley released two new recordings as a co-leader, “DMBQ Live” and “Day and Night” with his former teacher David Liebman. This will be Mike’s third performance under Catbird auspices since we began in 2004.

The show begins at 8p.m. Tickets are available for $20 at Joey’s and at Tidewater Books in Sackville. Limited seating is available so get your tickets early.
